Memory and Sensation

Memory is stored in the brain as circuits of related nerve cells. When a memory is recalled, specific circuits fire, recreating an approximation of the original encounter. We may recall visual images, patterns of sound, or physical sensations such as the feel of a cool breeze or the scents of surrounding vegetation or cooking food.

Scent is one of the most powerful memory triggers. As we remember, our physical sensations connect us to a particular place and time.
