Sensation and Physiology

Sensation is our first experience. Our senses detect variations in light, vibrations in the air, temperature and pressure on the skin, and specific molecules that we taste and smell. Sensory stimulation initiates electrical nerve impulses that send chemical signals to specific brain regions. The brain responds by sending signals to specific parts of the body, adjusting physiological processes that maintain life and prepare us for appropriate action.

Physiological response evolved over millions of years based on survival advantage, and is encoded in our DNA.
