I used to play in the freezing water until my legs were numb and my lips turned blue. Sometimes I would get knocked under by a sizable wave and come up coughing, having inhaled a mouthful. I would feel my grandmother's hand around my arm and when I emerged she'd be making a joke of it, so I wouldn't be scared.
